German Flail

Based on Original: Circa 15th Century, German, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

Originating from a threshing tool, the flail as a weapon took several forms. The piece replicated here was made to be used in one hand while fighting on foot or horse. This high gothic example of a hand flail has a beautiful design. The unique links of the chain are sculpted with two rows of spikes on their outer edge. The right angle links also allow for a sinuous flow of the head and chain when in motion. The grip is topped by a ring and butted by a turned finial.

I've had mine about ten years, and its given me pleasure.
It's solid, durable and well-made.
I added leather wrap to the handle, but have otherwise left it untouched.
Experimenting on old cars, I discovered just how functional this thing would be against armour.... war hammers, picks and axes will penetrate the metal, but then you are faced with trying to get the weapon out of the hole it made. This flail almost glides over metal, leaving behind a deep round dent with a triangle punched into the centre. It pretty much rolls itself off.
Many fun smashes at the junkyard left no significant damage to the weapon.
I will say, though, if you try this, wear LOTS of protection.
It's very easy to injure yourself.
